SBS 5306 Advanced Methods for Designing and Evaluating Social and Behavioral Health Interventions

This doctoral-level course provides students with a comprehensive foundation in intervention design, implementation, and evaluation, with an emphasis on social and behavioral sciences methodologies. Key concepts covered include, but are not limited to, types of research trials (e.g., efficacy, effectiveness, and hybrid designs), study design considerations, statistical power and sample size determination, ethical considerations (e.g., informed consent, data safety, and monitoring plans), strategies for recruitment and retention, interpretation of results, and evaluation. This course will follow an Intervention Mapping (IM) framework to guide the development of interventions that are theory-driven and evidence-based. Students will engage in applied learning through journal club discussions, group assignments, and hands-on exercises, culminating in the development and presentation of an intervention protocol. This course serves as a core methodological foundation for doctoral students conducting intervention research in public health and the social and behavioral sciences.
