SBS 5301 Community-Engaged and Community-Based Participatory Action Research (CEnR & CBPAR)
This advanced-level course is designed to equip doctoral and postdoctoral trainees with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary to conduct research and projects in collaboration with community members. Students will learn how to actively engage the community in the research process and address social and health issues within their communities with a strong focus on transformative and sustainable change to reduce health disparities. The course will cover foundational concepts and ethical considerations of CBPAR, and community engagement strategies: methods of community programming and outreach, social planning and engagement, forms and strategies for collaboration with community members and leaders, needs assessments, obtaining consent and buy-in, techniques of collaborative data collection and analysis, participatory research methods, action planning, and programmatic intervention development, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating interventions with community involvement.
