This doctoral course provides an in-depth exploration of social and behavioral science theories in public health research and health promotion, emphasizing their critical evaluation, adaptation, and application. Moving beyond theory identification to application of theories in explaining social and behavioral phenomena, students will examine the historical foundations, contemporary debates, and methodological implications of key social and behavioral theories. They will also refine their ability to construct and apply theoretical frameworks that will inform their dissertation research. Designed to prepare students for Part II of the Ph.D. Qualifying Examination, their dissertation, and future grant writing, this course ensures that students produce tangible scholarly products, including a well-developed theoretical framework and a rigorous application of theory to a research problem. By the end of the course, students will have the theoretical foundation necessary to advance their dissertation research and contribute meaningfully to the field of public health.
