SBS 5305 Advanced Proposal Writing for Social and Behavioral Sciences

This course will bring together skills learned during the SBS Ph.D. coursework to culminate in development of a strong research grant application. Through the course of the semester, students will: describe a compelling issue for research, including what is known and not known from the extant literature and how the proposed research findings would impact public health; delineate research questions that will be answered via the proposed specific aims, including the independent and dependent variables that will be assessed and how the research design is appropriate to answer the research questions; and develop succinct and compelling text for each section of the proposal and supplementary documents, as specified in the particular RFA (Request for Applications), and note strengths and limitations of the proposed plan. This will be a hands-on course that combines lectures, readings, and in-class critique and evaluation of proposal drafts. The final project will be an application submitted or ready for submission.
