QDS 5300 Introduction to Public Health Data
This course will introduce students to the types of data used in public health, the sources of this information, and the ways in which these data can be used. The first section provides an overview of descriptive data, including mortality, morbidity, risk factor, and survey information. Then, analytical research methods are presented, including randomized controlled clinical trials, cohort studies, and case-control studies. Finally, students will be introduced to various measures of association and the concepts of causation, random and systematic error, confounding, and effect modification.
