FIM 2209 FIM-HEMATOLOGY

This interactive course will build on students' prior knowledge of benign hematology and transfusion medicine, as well as demonstrate how recent advances in our understanding has led to exciting new treatment strategies in the field.

We will discuss the pathophysiology and management of common hematologic disorders, including hemoglobinopathies, bleeding disorders, and hypercoagulable states.  Students will learn about new advances in gene therapy and stem cell transplantation.  Knowledge will be applied through team-based learning sessions, problem sets and interactive case presentations.

Students will perform hands-on laboratory work, which is intended to instill a deeper understanding of physiology and enhance motivation in applying challenging concepts to patient care. Students will make and review peripheral blood smears.  Students will observe how a hemoglobin electrophoresis is performed. We will perform and interpret coagulation testing, experimenting with how changes in sample collection or patient factors may affect the results.

We will listen to the experiences of patients that live with chronic hematologic conditions.  This patient-centered learning will allow students to better understand and reflect on the meaning of caring for patients with hematologic conditions.

Students will learn about blood product components and safe transfusion practices.  We will take a trip to the blood bank to have a better understanding of what happens "behind the scenes" when a transfusion is ordered.
