GC 5105 Health Equity and ELSI (Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications) in Genomic Medicine
This course provides an overview of complex topics in genetic counseling related to the inequities that specific communities and populations have faced in regard to genetics over history. Considerations of patient need by specific population will be discussed, as well as reflective discussion of learners' strengths and implicit biases that can result in changes to patient care. Ethical discussions will center around various dilemmas in the genetic counseling profession, primarily related to the ethical principles (beneficence, non-maleficence, justice and autonomy). Learners will have a better understanding of their role in the broader health system in regard to structural inequities and the opportunities to improve care for patients.
