This course introduces students to the foundations of neurologic physical therapy. The topics of motor control, motor learning, and neuroplasticity are introduced and the basics of neurologic examination, including outcomes assessment and goal writing, are covered. Students learn the basic principles of neurologic physical therapy treatment as well as common nonphysical problems (cognition, language, mood) that often impact individuals with neurologic conditions. Medical providers cover pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, methods of diagnosis, and medical treatment for the neurologic conditions of Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, vestibular dysfunction, and other diseases of the nerves. Physical therapy faculty cover the physical therapy examination, evaluation, prognosis, and treatment of these conditions as well. Students are required to examine, assess, develop treatment plans, and provide physical therapy treatment for individuals with these diagnoses during patient lab experiences.
