DPT 5340 NEUROMUSC PTNT/CLNT MGMNT I

In order to care for the patient/client with a neurologic condition, students must understand the foundations of neurologic physical therapy. Medical providers from UTSW and PT faculty present information on progressive and nonprogressive central nervous system disorders including the pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, methods of diagnoses, and cutting-edge treatments. Program faculty who provide expert clinical care to individuals with neurologic diagnoses cover the primary movement system impairments and motor control problems associated with central nervous system disorders. Physical therapy examination, diagnosis-specific outcome measures, and task analysis are discussed in class and in lab sessions. Students also learn about the language and perceptual impairments that compound an individual’s disability, writing assessments and developing goals, and motor learning principles that include evidence-based strategies to guide decision-making about structuring your patient’s intervention.

This course prepares students for NPM II, which focuses on evidence-based approaches to the treatment of patients with acute and chronic, central, and peripheral neurologic disorders.
