NS 5102 SYNAPSES AND CHANNELS

In this course we will explore the physiology and molecular architecture of ion channels and chemical synapses. We will begin with a discussion of common electrophysiological and structural biology methods relevant to the field. Then we have an overview of synaptic anatomy and physiology. We will then jump across the synapse to the ionotropic and metabotropic receptors and voltage-gated channels that convert chemical into electrical and longer-lasting signals and propagate the action potential. We will end with ion channels that are activated independently of chemical synapses.
