Academic Promotion, Remediation, Probation, and Dismissal

When a student completes the course requirements of an academic session satisfactorily, he or she is promoted to the next period, provided there are no reasons to delay or deny promotion.

Students with an academic deficiency will be referred to the Student Promotions Committee, which is composed of both appointed and elected faculty.  The Student Promotions Committee reviews all important aspects of each student referral and makes decisions in accordance with the Student Promotions Committee Guidelines.

The Student Promotions Committee will determine a remediation plan for students with academic deficiencies, which may include repeating specific courses or an academic year, or removal of the deficiency by other appropriate means. The Student Promotions Committee has complete discretion to make academic decisions and determine appropriate remediation. Academic decisions are not necessarily progressive. For example, the committee may place a student on Academic Probation for egregious professionalism deficiencies, regardless of whether the student is required to repeat the year. Serious or multiple deficiencies may result in dismissal, even if a student has not previously been placed on Academic Warning or Academic Probation.

A student who is required to remediate a course or clerkship deficiencies not requiring the repeat of an academic year may be placed on Academic Warning until all deficiencies are successfully remediated.

A student who is required to remediate a course or clerkship deficiencies requiring the repeat of an academic year may be placed on Academic Probation and remain as such until successful completion of the entire repeated academic year.

Any further deficiencies during the period of Academic Warning or Academic Probation will prompt review by the Student Promotions Committee and may result in additional action, up to and including dismissal.
