PSY 2106 CHEMICAL DEPENDENCY

Interested students will be actively involved in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of addictive disorders. The student will gain experience in the pharmacological management of addictive disorders. (Methadone, Buprenorphine, Disulfiram, Naltrexone, Acamprosate, Nicotine Replacement Therapies, Wellbutrin, and Varenicline.) The VA addiction service challenges the student to recognize the social context of addiction and the difficulty of treating dually diagnosed patient. The patient population includes a full spectrum of psychoactive substance use disorders including alcoholism, nicotine, cocaine, opioid, cannabis, and amphetamine and benzodiazepine dependence. Patients with Dual Disorders (Chemical Addiction + other AXIS I or II Psychiatric Disorder) receive further specialized treatment. The student will have the opportunity to sit in on Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Module classes lead by our experienced counselors.
