MED 2122W COVID-19 TELEMEDICINE
This course is proposed to 1) provide students with telemedicine experience in a supervised, algorithm-based virtual environment and 2) provide students with experience in providing a critical medical function for 1) outpatients infected with COVID-19 and 2) the UTSW and Parkland Health Systems in their efforts to care for these patients. Basic structure: Teams of 3-5 medical students supervised by one member of the UTSW primary care or hospitalist faculty will provide telephone follow-up for COVID-19 positive patients who are 1) discharge from CUH or Parkland Hospital after an acute care hospitalization or 2) discharged from the UTSW or Parkland Emergency Departments with mild to moderate COVID-19 disease. The purpose of this call will be to 1) check on the progress of the patient, 2) collect pre-specified clinical data, 3) provide symptom related advice either by faculty-developed algorithms or through direct contact with a faculty supervisor, 4) ensure appropriate clinical follow-up is arranged with a telemedicine appointment with the patient ‘s primary care physician, and 5) review isolation expectations, barriers to isolation such as food, soap and water, hand sanitizer, bleach, washer/dryer, etc.
