MED 2021W INTRO TO CLINICAL ONCOLOGY

This is a 2 week introductory course enabling the student to explore the medical specialty/discipline of hematology and oncology. The student will learn about the scope of practice, frequently encountered pathology/diagnoses, and specialty specific diagnostic procedures. The purpose of the course is to allow the student the opportunity to explore a career in the specialty, and/or to acquire knowledge in the specialty regarding appropriate referrals, consults, etc. Relevant to future career plans. The elective will highlight the multidisciplinary approach to neoplasia with exposure to various disciplines involved in caring for a cancer patient. The course is offered remotely with Skype links to attend tumor boards on campus and with case based discussions by faculty offered by zoom. The students will be exposed to newer approaches to manage neoplasia including use of artificial intelligence. They will learn about the history of cancer therapy and future directions.
