Leave of Absence

A student may request a non-medical leave of absence using the Leave Request Form available from the Office of the Registrar. The decision to approve or deny a request for a leave of absence is entirely at UT Southwestern’s discretion, and will take into account the student’s academic standing, the reason for and duration of the requested leave, the student’s degree progress, and the impact a period of leave may have on the student’s ability to successfully complete program requirements. In general, requests for a leave of absence longer than twelve (12) months will not be approved.

A leave of absence requested for a student’s own medical condition should be submitted to Campus Accessibility Services in the Office of Institutional Equity & Access and will be handled in accordance with the Reasonable Accommodations for Qualified Applicants and Learners with Disabilities policy.

In certain circumstances, it may be necessary for UT Southwestern to place a student on an administrative leave of absence for academic reasons (e.g., if a student fails a prerequisite course and cannot progress in the curriculum until the course is offered again).  The length of an administrative leave of absence for academic reasons will be determined by the applicable program, but will not exceed 12 months

Active Military Service: Students may be temporarily excused from attending classes, engaging in academic activities, or taking examinations if they are called to active military service. Students should follow the applicable absence policies of their school, program or course director.  Students who are excused for these activities are expected to complete assignments and coursework in the time and manner determined by the student’s school and program of study.
