GEN 2010W EPIDEMIC FIGHTING ELECTIVE

Vigorous contact tracing along with community mitigation and infection control measures, is vital to slowing epidemic transmission. Students enrolled in this elective will be trained to serve as frontline interviewers for the Dallas County COVID-19 contact tracing program. Embedded students will have the unique opportunity to learn how public health works in disaster situations, and to gain a firsthand understanding of the community impact and needs which arise during a pandemic. Students will learn the basic principles of epidemic control via non-pharmaceutical interventions, and will become proficient in interviewing skills to counsel cases on the importance of self-isolation, and self-monitoring, to elicit and inform exposed contacts of their risk and need to quarantine.
