Research Activities

Research Thesis:

Students are required to engage in a rigorous research process and conclude their training with a submission-ready manuscript. Students will work with the research course instructor and their research Chair to develop a research proposal with mandatory submission to the JEMF student award or an equivalent funding opportunity. Students will engage in independent research under the supervision of their research Chair and the Director of the Genetic Counseling Program. They will be required to provide regular updates to their research committee and present their progress to their classmates.

Requirements for completing the research portion of their training include a journal-formatted manuscript and presentation of their thesis with questions from their committee. Students are highly encouraged to submit their finished manuscripts for publications. Students can choose a novel research project that is aligned with their interests, or work on a portion of a larger research project at UT Southwestern or other affiliate sites. The scope of the project will be determined by the type of project (existing or new), methodology, and student interest. It is expected that all research covers a large enough scope to justify publication.
