FAMB 1809 OUTPATIENT CARE CLERKSHIP
The core clerkship of outpatient care is designed to prepare and expose students to preventive medicine, primary care role models, and management of chronic diseases across the age spectrum in an outpatient care setting. This six week clerkship will consist of three weeks of outpatient internal medicine and pediatric experiences and three weeks of family medicine. Students will be taught to gather a problem-focused history and exam, to recognize acute exacerbation of chronic illness, generate a differential diagnosis for an acute illness, promote concepts of wellness and disease prevention, and work within a team-based setting. The IM/Peds components will include exposure to both primary care and specialty clinics primarily at UTSW/Parkland/Children's. For the FM portion of the Clerkship, students may be based at clinics affiliated with UT Southwestern, surrounding family medicine residency programs, or private practitioner offices. Most private-practice office sites are in the DFW-metroplex communities, with one rural site in Jacksboro and one site in Austin; each of these sites is staffed by adjunct clinical faculty. The didactic portion of the Clerkship consists of lectures and small-group activities that focus on clinical topics and patient and family issues commonly encountered in an outpatient setting
