Insurance Requirements
Health Insurance – All UT Southwestern students are required to have and maintain major medical health insurance coverage while enrolled. UT Southwestern has contracted with AcademicBlue Student Health Plan, a Blue Cross Blue Shield plan, to make health insurance available to students who do not have insurance coverage from another provider. All alternative insurance plans must comply with the PPACA (Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act). International students should consult the Office of International Affairs for more information regarding the insurance requirements for international students. Proof of coverage is required or students will be enrolled in the Student Health Plan at their own expense.
Professional Liability Insurance – In accordance with Regents Rule 50501, UT Southwestern students in academic programs that involve direct contact with patients (“covered academic programs”) are required to purchase professional liability insurance. Premium rates, coverage limits, eligibility, exclusions, and responsibilities are set forth by the University of Texas System Professional Medical Liability Benefit Plan (the “Plan”). Professional Liability Insurance is charged and collected as a part of tuition and fees.
Disability Insurance – Although UT Southwestern does not require students to have long-term disability insurance, it is very strongly recommended. Resources to consider are available on UT Southwestern’s
Student Disability Insurance
page.
